McCarthy signs new Blackburn deal

Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy has signed a new three-year deal that means he is contracted to the club until the summer of 2011.

The 30-year-old South Africa striker has scored 35 goals in 87 games for Rovers since he joined them from Porto in a £2.5m move in July 2006.

McCarthy was Blackburn's top scorer last season, with 24 goals, and has added another 11 this term.

He had been in negotiations over a new contract for a number of weeks.

Rovers and McCarthy had to wait for the player's work permit to be renewed to complete the deal, but that proved a formality.

His new deal will take him beyond the 2010 World Cup, in which he will hope to play a role in his homeland.
