Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni said goalkeeper Dean Kiely's display had ensured his side's 1-0 win over Colombia at Craven Cottage.

Trapattoni agreed that his side had been "lucky" to claim the win after Robbie Keane's early strike.

"Dean Kiely made two or three great saves. He saved one or two (certain) goals," said the Republic boss.

"Colombia deserved a goal in the first half but this match was a very big experience for our players."

Trapattoni felt his team regrouped to contain the classy Colombians in the second half, after they had been given the runaround by the South Americans during most of the opening period.

"They (Colombia) played well in the second half but Kiely didn't have any more difficult situations after half-time," added the Italian coach.

Trapattoni was delighted by the displays of Aiden McGeady and John O'Shea, who came into the team after missing Saturday's 1-1 draw against Serbia at Croke Park.

He also praised Paul McShane's performance as a good reaction after his error gifted the Serbs their goal on Saturday.

"Paul had a big game which was important for him because the last time, Paul was a little bit disappointed with his performance," said Trapattoni.

Asked whether he expected the likes of Stephen Ireland, Steve Finnan and Andy O'Brien to end their international exiles, the Republic boss replied that his squad will be "stronger" in the autumn.

"Damien Duff was also missing today (because of injury)," pointed out the Republic coach.
