SA safeguards World Cup power

The South African government is on guard against major electricity outages that could affect its hosting of the Fifa World Cup in 2010.

Government spokesman Joe Phaahla said there were concerns about the supply of power that is traditionally weakest in the winter months of June and July.

"We do not want to see blackouts during the tournament," Phaahla said.

"The government is working hard to ensure that all stadia will be powered by generators," he added.

Phaahla heads the government's World Cup 2010 Unit set up to ensure various obligations made by South Africa to Fifa are met ahead of the tournament.

In June this year, South Africa experienced a record demand of electricity during a cold snap affecting large parts of the country.

"The (problem of electricity) is receiving urgent attention and there is nothing to worry about," Phaahla said.
