Road closures included the A4042 at Llanellen, the B4598 Abergavenny to Usk road north of Llansair Kilgeddin and the B4598 Abergavenny to Raglan road at Llansanffraid Court.

Nine flood warnings are currently in force across Wales.

Dyfed Powys Police closed the B4300 in Carmarthen for a period and advised motorists to take care.

They said the A40 between Llandeilo and Llandovery was also affected.

The South Wales fire service were called out to deal with flooding on the B4246 between Gofilon and Llanfoist.

Keith Kingsbury from Govilon, Abergavenny said it took him over half an hour to take his wife to work in Nevill Hall hospital.

"There was very bad flooding on the Govilon to Llanfoist road (A465) where water has been running down from the Blorenge and was a foot deep," said Mr Kingsbury.

"The road from Llanellen was congested the entire length which made a work colleague one-and-a-half hours late (A4042).

"This was partly because of the flooding and partly the temporary lights on the new roadworks in Llanfoist where a new bridge for the new by-pass is being constructed.

"The main problem is the traffic calming chicane at the start of Llanfoist which causes huge problems with traffic when there is a problem on the heads of the valleys road through Abergavenny.

"The floods are the worst the town has seen for a long time and is a result of the high rainfall and the ground being sodden."

The cellar of the Bridgend Inn, Crickhowell, had been flooded for two nights in a row and staff were up all night pumping out water. The pub opened as normal on Tuesday lunchtime.

The Environment Agency Wales said more showers were forecast for Wales but that the nation had seen the worst of the rain.
