Canal towpath lights switched on
A stretch of one of London's canals has undergone a £250,000 transformation to make it safer and more accessible.

Special lighting has been installed on the towpath and at eight bridges along a quarter-mile section of Regent's Canal in Camden, north London.

The 12-month project included removing graffiti, putting in CCTV and erecting new signs and railings. Police patrols have also been stepped up.

British Waterways hopes the work will boost tourism in the area.

Mark Bensted, of British Waterways, said the work was carried out "to reduce anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime around the popular Camden Lock area".

"We have created something which... will help make Camden a safer place to live, work and visit, encouraging more people to use the canal for walking, cycling, fishing and boating," he said.

The lights use subtle programmes of gradual movement and are strong enough to light the area safely and provide a clear image for the CCTV cameras.
